DIY Pest Prevention & Control
FLY CONTROL:
A fly infestation could pose a serious health risk as flies are known to spread a range of diseases, like Salmonella and E.coli.
If you want to prevent flies, there are some practical steps you can take to deter them. We recommended using fly control solutions indoors AND outdoors to cover all potential problem site areas and ensure effective fly control.
Fly Control Tips:
– Keep all surfaces clear of food debris and liquid spillages.
– Do not leave food uncovered.
– Ensure dustbins /compost bins have sealed lids.
– Clean up after pets (their faeces are the perfect breeding place for flies)
– Cover rainwater tanks with a fitted lid.
– Clean up dead flies which provide a tasty snack for other insects.
– Fit fly screens to windows especially around kitchen and waste areas.
– Ensure drains are kept clean and free of debris.
F A C T:
Common house flies are attracted to decaying organic waste such as faeces and rotting meat, whereas fruit flies will look for sugary substances and feed more commonly on overripe fruit, spilled soft drinks and alcohol.
ANT CONTROL:
As the majority of ant species prefer sunny climates, our environment is perfect for ants to thrive in. There is no single treatment application that controls all ants and most species will never even cross your path. When an area is cleared of activity, it is re-infested by ant colonies from the surrounding environment- often described as a ‘vacuum effect’. Most ants only come into your home to look for food and they are attracted to anything that’s sweet and sticky.
Ant Control Tips:
– Track down ants access points and seal off all entry points.
– Keep all surfaces clear of food debris and liquid spillages.
– Do not leave food uncovered!
– Ensure dustbins /compost bins have sealed lids.
– Clear away pets food when not eaten straight away.
– Ensure drains are kept clean and free of debris.
F A C T:
Once an ant has discovered a food source it leaves a pheromone trail- this chemical helps other ants from the colony find the food too.
Some birds spread their wings on an ant’s nest to get ants in their feathers. It is thought that this is because the ants squirt formic acid that gets rid of bird parasites.
MOSQUITO CONTROL:
Mosquitoes are synonymous with the summer season, but that doesn’t mean we like it! Mosquito bites are not normally painful, but the itchiness that follows can cause some discomfort. Mosquitoes will normally bite you at dawn or dusk- that’s when their internal clocks tell them that it’s feeding time.
Mozzie Control Tips:
– Keep windows & doors closed after dark.
– Fit insects screens to windows.
– Don’t leave standing water (breeding ground for mosquitoes)
– If you have a garden pond, add some goldfish as they will eat mosquito larvae.
– Cover rainwater tanks to prevent mosquito larvae in the water.
– Try natural repellents such as citronella, neem oil, peppermint oil, lemon eucalyptus oil, witch hazel, garlic, lavender and vanilla extract.
– Avoid bright colours or strong scents as these attract insects.
– Reduce exposed skin before dawn or after dusk.
– Avoid areas with slow moving or stagnant water.
F A C T:
Mozzies seem to be attracted to bright colours and are found close to still-standing water, where their larvae feed and develop. They can develop from eggs to adults in just six to ten days.
COCKROACH CONTROL:
Cockroaches are infamous for spreading disease and are associated with various other health risks. The main cockroaches found in Cape Town are the American, German & Oriental Cockroaches. A swift response after the first sighting is essential to control cockroaches in your home.
Cockroach Control Tips:
– Keep all surfaces clear of clear food debris and liquid spillages.
– Do not leave food open/uncovered!
– Do not leave liquids in sinks or buckets.
– Empty the rubbish on a daily basis.
– Ensure dustbins /compost bins have sealed lids.
– Remove pet food, drink and litter trays before nightfall.
– Rinse food & drink canisters before putting in recycle bins.
– Ensure drains are kept clean and free of debris as this is where cockroaches breed.
– Ventilate crawl spaces to prevent moisture build-up.
– Run water periodically in spare bathrooms to keep u-traps filled.
– Seal entry points to deny access to cockroaches.
F A C T:
Cockroaches release an aggregation pheromone in their droppings telling others they have found a safe harbourage. Increases in eczema and childhood asthma have even been linked to cockroach droppings. READ MORE.
